Things were even worse when McQueen and Paul Newman starred in the classic disaster B-movie The Towering Inferno, as Doug Roberts, the Glass Tower architect and Michael O’Halloran, SFFD 5th Battalion Chief, alongside fellow A-listers William Holden, Faye Dunaway and Fred Astaire.

McQueen and Dunaway made it very clear that they were not to be approached by set visitors, alienating the rest of the cast, and then the male star exploded with fury when his rivalry with Newman came to a head.

The actor was vocally enraged on set when he discovered that his rival had a grand total of twelve more lines than he did.

In response, Newman blasted back that McQueen was a “Chickens**t!” And things soon went from towering rages to infernal feuding…
