Joking that the events of that day were still “etched in his memory”, Jonathan remembered: “We tried to get him onto the programme for months and months, and the only way that we could do it was to doorstep him.

“And he gave his assurances even that morning of, ‘Oh yes, yes I’ll be right out,’ as he loaded the cart up with milk.

“And he still decided he didn’t want to come on GMB and speak to me or to the presenters Susanna and Piers at the time.

“After all of that he decided he’d had enough and to go into a fridge and we didn’t see him.”
