While WhatsApp is the most popular instant messaging platform, Telegram has gained a lot of users in the last couple of years. Telegram keeps bringing new features and some of them aren’t found on WhatsApp either. So far, Telegram has been completely free. However, it looks like a paid version of the app will come out soon. Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram, confirmed this development and explained how the paid version will work.
Why is Telegram launching a paid version?
Durov said that users have been wanting new features and Telegram looked into ways to “let you go beyond what is already crazy.” However, the problem, according to Durov is that “if we were to remove all limits for everyone, our server and traffic costs would have become unmanageable, so the party would be unfortunately over for everyone.” So, Telegram wants to let its “most demanding fans get more” while keeping its existing features free to make those raised limits a paid option.
What is Telegram Premium?
It is a monthly subscription plan that will allow anyone to use additional features, speed and resources. It will also allow users to support Telegram and join the club that receives new features first.
What happens to ‘free’ users of Telegram?
All existing features will remain free, Durov said. Further, there will be new features coming to free users as well. Durov also said that even users who don’t subscribe to Telegram Premium will be able to enjoy some of its benefits. Like they will be able to view extra-large documents, media and stickers sent by Premium users, or tap to add Premium reactions already pinned to a message to react in the same way.
When will Telegram Premium launch and how much will it cost?
Telegram Premium subscription plan will launch later this month. As of now, Telegram hasn’t revealed how much will it cost.
