The best states in America for a cheap holiday in 2023 have been revealed by experts at Adventures on the Rock who analysed the best and most affordable locations for a camping trip. According to the travel gurus, Wyoming is the best option for those Britons who want to travel to the US this year without breaking the bank as the state has the highest number of campsites and RV parks, and it is just “stunning”.

The top 10 US states are not only the best options for camping trips but also for a low-cost summer holiday as the experts analysed other factors such as the number of national parks and landmarks relative to state area, the number of hiking trails, average fuel prices and yearly average rainfall.

The diversity of plant and animal species, deaths per 10 million national park visits and deaths caused by dangerous animal or plant exposure were also taken into consideration when naming the top states in America.

Wyoming was followed in the ranking by the US state of Montana, which came second as the best destination for a camping holiday, offering the highest number of hiking trails and the second-highest number of free and paid campsites.

New Mexico ranked as the third-best state for camping, scoring well across several factors, and other popular destinations like Idaho and the beautiful state of Vermont, in New England, also featured in the top 10 list.

Travel experts at Planetware shared the best places to visit in Wyoming, including Yellowstone National Park, the “world’s first and oldest national park”.

At Grand Teton National Park, where “wildlife is abundant”, travellers will find “spectacular scenery” and a “paradise” for staying overnight in the campgrounds.

In their travel guide, the experts also recommended the beautiful town of Jackson, “a popular stop on the way to Yellowstone” which “exudes the spirit of the Wild West”.

Other famous spots are Hot Springs State Park, the Devils Tower National Monument and Bridger-Teton National Forest.

From the travel and holiday blog Megan & Aram, the two experienced travellers commented on some of the “jaw-dropping places to visit in Wyoming”.

They said that Wyoming is “one of the most underrated states in the US” and suggested visiting the Black Hills Forest, home to the Cheyenne and Lakota Native tribes.

Thermopolis is home to the “world’s largest mineral hot spring” and the city of Cody is the “rodeo capital” and a must-visit.

They also recommended the National Elk Refuge as one of “the most interesting places to visit in Wyoming”. It was created in 1912 to protect the habitat of the largest elk on Earth, they explained.

A travel expert from Adventures on the Rock commented on the results saying that it “provides a fascinating insight into which states offer nature lovers the most well-rounded camping experiences” which could be a cheap holiday option for Britons who want to visit the US this summer.

They explained: “Wyoming stands out as a top spot for campers, due to its abundance of RV parks, free and paid campsites, and range of hiking trails. As spring continues to bloom, campers may want to consider a trip to The Cowboy State if they are looking for their next adventure.

“One of the key reasons people plan camping trips is for the adventure component. Exploring the great outdoors, observing different wildlife, and hiking trails are all part of the allure.

“However, safety should always be paramount, so it is crucial to research and plan ahead as much as possible, before undertaking any camping trip,” the experts added.
