loveholidays has named a few lesser-visited summer holiday destinations which might be cheaper than a trip to a more popular spot. One of the hotspots to make this year’s list is beautiful Belgium.

A spokesperson said: “Belgium, home to premium chocolates, waffles and beer, is bursting with culture, architecture and museums, making it a great holiday destination for foodies, or anyone looking for an alternative option to a beach holiday this summer.

“While it is often considered a top travel destination in the winter, Belgium has plenty to offer in the warmer months too, and its close proximity to the UK makes it an easy and convenient travel destination for families in particular.”

Belgium might not be Britons’ first thought when it comes to planning a summer holiday, but it could be the perfect choice for a quieter break.

One of the top rated destinations to explore in Belgium is Bruges, a pretty city known for its cobbled streets and canals.

A tourist wrote on Tripadvisor: “I travel a good amount and I can clearly state that Bruges is one of the most charming and picturesque cities I’ve ever visited. You won’t be disappointed.”

Belgium’s capital city, Brussels, is another enticing city break destination with plenty for Britons to explore.

A tourist who visited the city’s Grand Place wrote on Tripadvisor: “This is my third time here and I am still enchanted by its charm. What a great city!”

Belgium is a fantastic destination for foodies and has a few well-known treats tourists won’t want to miss.

Chocolate has been a major industry in Belgium since the 19th century and the country exports more than 400,000 tons per year.

It’s also home to the world’s largest chocolate factory, the Wieze Plant. Tourists can learn more about the country’s history of chocolate at the Chocolate Museum or Bruges or they could learn through sampling a range of treats from one of the country’s 2,000 chocolatiers.

A trip to Belgium wouldn’t be complete without enjoying a cone of frites with a typical topping of mayo, tomato paste and peppers.

The country is also famous for its waffles and the Belgian Royal Family are thought to be particular fans of the waffles from Liege.
