TL;DR

  • A leaker has revealed Pixel Fold design details.
  • The leak reiterates a more compact take on the Galaxy Fold-style form factor.
  • The device will apparently have a selfie camera mounted on the frame of the foldable screen.

It seems like Google has been working on a foldable or two for a couple of years now, with leaks pointing to at least one of them being a Galaxy Fold-style device. Now, a long-time leaker has dished out more apparent details.

Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station has posted a few purported design details for the so-called Pixel Fold. The machine-translated post suggests that the back of the Pixel foldable is in line with the Pixel 7 and that the front bears a resemblance to the Oppo Find N. The leaker also claims that the device has a “relatively small-sized” main display that folds horizontally inward (as opposed to a vertically folding design like clamshell foldables).

Digital Chat Station also issued a few more claims about the Pixel Fold. They assert that the outer screen has a center-mounted punch-hole display and that the folding screen has a full-screen design without a punch-hole cutout. Instead, the foldable apparently has a small selfie camera positioned on the frame.

This wouldn’t be the first time we saw a frame-mounted selfie camera, as devices like 2011’s Nokia N9 and Xiaomi’s early Mix phones all adopted a similar camera placement. But it would still be an interesting alternative to a punch-hole cutout, under-display camera, or the original Fold’s thick cutout. Hopefully, Google is able to accommodate a camera on the frame while still keeping the bezels relatively thin.

It’s also not the first time we’ve heard about Google’s foldable possibly offering a more compact design. An image of a Google foldable found in the Android 12L beta earlier this year may have suggested a smaller design as well.

Either way, it sounds like you shouldn’t quite give up on a Google Pixel foldable after all. But will we see it before the end of the year? Well, that’s a question for another day.
