The Last of Us Season 1 ended with a powerful finale, which brought the climactic ending from the original title to live-action glory.

With Season 1 done and dusted, fans are excited about the series’ future, as showrunner Craig Mazin and franchise creator Neil Druckmann deliver the goods with actors Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, who play Joel and Ellie, respectively.

Following Season 1’s end, fans have now turned their focus towards the HBO series’ future. With the show already renewed for a second season, fans are wondering what and when they can expect to see Joel and Ellie return. Here’s everything you need to know about The Last of Us Season 2:

Plot details for Season 2 of The Last of Us

Season 2 will most likely adapt the PlayStation 4 sequel to the hit Naughty Dog title, which debuted in 2020. The game features a major time skip. However, The Last of Us Part II does reference the past during flashback moments.

Unlike Season 1 which adapted the entire storyline of the first title, the same won’t happen with The Last of Us Part II, as confirmed by creator Neil Druckmann. In a recent interview with GQ, the Naughty Dog veteran confirmed that Part II’s storyline will be told in multiple seasons.

For those unfamiliar with the sequel, Part II takes place four years after the events of the original, with a much older Ellie, Joel and a new character named Abby, who enter the duo’s life. The sequel is well known for delving deep into themes of vengeance and retribution. Along with that, it’s known for Naughty Dog taking some wild storytelling choices that have continued to divide the franchise’s fandom.

Cast for Season 2 of The Last of Us

It’s a no-brainer for Season 2 to feature both Bella and Pedro as Ellie and Joel. Moreover, we will also see the return of Gabriel Luna as Tommy. So far, casting for new characters such as Abby and Dina haven’t been revealed. But more information will be soon revealed by the show’s crew.

Release date of Season 2 of The Last of Us

During the show’s run on HBO, Pascal had teased the filming of Season 2 to take place later this year. That would suggest a release timeline for the series to debut its second season in late 2024. However, if shooting is delayed and taking place next year, then it’s very likely that Season 2 will debut in 2025.

The Last of Us Season 3 Details

It seems that the season 3 for the series has been confirmed by the showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. In a recent interview with GQ, the duo was asked how they were going to fit the entirety of the second game in one season. To which they replied stating that it is going to be more than one.

They haven’t confirmed how many seasons The Last of Us series will have eventually, but we know for sure that Part 2 of the game will be spread across two seasons. It is being speculated that this move is being made in order to provide more screentime to Pedro Pascal’s Joel as (spoilers) those who have played the game would know that the character is killed off in season 2.
