The Repair Shop’s Jay Blades unveils new career which could see couples getting ‘naked’ | Celebrity News | Showbiz & TV

Jay Blades, 52, is best known as The Repair Shop’s resident furniture restoration expert, but now he’s decided to switch workshop benches for nightclub turntables. The TV host had the nation open-mouthed when he announced his plans to become a DJ and cheekily told them that, with him at the helm, things might get “sexual”.

Jay unveiled his unexpected new career choice at the National Television Awards, where he made a very dapper appearance in a suit, tie and smart cap.

He revealed that he will make his DJing debut at the Ned – a five star hotel and member’s club in the heart of London – this Saturday.

“If you bring your partner down there you might get a bit naked, as the music does get a bit sexual,” he admitted.

“I’m being taught by my friend, Ray Banton, and playing music that he supplies me – you can expect Eighties and Nineties.”

Jay has overcome huge challenges in his life in general, once resisting the urge to drive his car over a bridge during a period of depression, he told The Mirror last year.

In the past he’s faced homelessness, and his childhood was spent on a gritty council estate in a home infested by rats.

He was raised by a single mother, and admits he harbours resentment towards his father for leaving.

“In hindsight, growing up, I never knew how much resentment I had for not having a father,” he explained in an interview with the Telegraph.

“I had to be the man of the house and all this macho stuff.”

It wasn’t until the age of 21 that he finally met his absent father – and although he had “no expectations”, he was still bitterly disappointed.

Jay now regards his dad merely as “the man who contributed towards my birth”.

In spite of the adversity he’s been through in his life, Jay excelled at furniture restoration, and he received support from the BBC to help him conquer his literacy issues and win in the world of TV.

Now his next challenge will be DJing – and anyone wanting to catch a glimpse of him in his new career should keep their eyes peeled.
