Elon Musk has been extremely vocal about getting users to pay $8 for a verified account and Twitter Blue in general. In case you’re wondering what Twitter Blue is then simply put, it’s a subscription service that gives users extra features. The service is available in five countries — the US, the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Musk was recently asked about whether the service will be made available in India or not. Musk answered in the affirmative and said that it will arrive in “less than a month”. That was a few days back and since then speculation has been rife about Twitter Blue arriving in India. Some screenshots were posted on Twitter, which suggested that the Twitter Blue subscription will cost Rs 719.
In fact, we checked on the Twitter app for iOS and under the “In-app purchases” tab you can see monthly cost of Rs 719 for Twitter Blue subscription. Since the in-app purchases tab also shows a few other subscriptions, which seem rather irrelevant, this should be taken with a dose of caution. As clearly, Twitter hasn’t confirmed the subscription price for Twitter Blue in India.
If we take Musk’s tweet on the pricing of Twitter Blue, then perhaps it may not cost Rs 719 as has been suggested. Earlier this month, Musk had suggested that the subscription cost will not be uniform across countries and it will be “adjusted by country proportionate to purchasing power parity.” So a rough calculation suggests that if one has to pay $8 for Twitter Blue in the US — which is under Rs 700 — then in India it shouldn’t be Rs 719.
However, confusion still prevails over Twitter Blue roll out, prices and more. It’s not clear how much will the subscription — if and when rolled out — will cost in India.
