A third of engaged couples believe they will never be able to afford to marry – while more than a quarter are holding off as they are put off by the cost. And half say they are having to choose between a big bash or buying a house.

In 2019 there were 219,850 weddings, data shows, typically costing £23,030. But more than half of unmarried couples now say asking parents for help in paying for their special day was outdated. And 58 per cent expect to take full responsibility for the bills.

Two-thirds of those surveyed believe people will have to settle for smaller weddings as prices soar. And more than a fifth will be relying on loans to cover it.

The research found those saving for nuptials are trying to put away an average of £285 a month.

Chris Rudden, of investment consultants Moneyfarm, which commissioned the poll, said: “It shows how expensive the traditional white wedding has become.

“So some couples are postponing their big day or even going into debt to cover the costs.

“But the perfect wedding doesn’t mean spending beyond your means.

“Ask yourself what you can afford and budget accordingly.”
