Third Test, Day One highlights, results, latest updates; Major batting issues doomed South Africa, says Mark Taylor

Australia comes into the Sydney Test holding an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, and even allowing for the home side’s injury concerns, former skipper Mark Taylor isn’t expecting a South African revival over the next few days.

“We were very concerned about South Africa’s batting, and we’ve seen nothing in the first two Test matches to alleviate that issue,” he said on Nine’s Outside the Rope.

“I can’t see how they’re going to cobble together enough runs to worry Australia in this Test match.

“Dean Elgar is their best equipped player, he’s got 13 Test match hundreds, the rest of the team, the rest of his team, the best they’ve got is one.

“I can’t see how South Africa are going to get out of the problems they’re in until they find batsmen who can make hundreds to win them Test matches.”
