News of Tom Brady’s decision to come out of his short retirement stint came to the delight of many NFL fans, except for one, who looks to be more than $700,000 out of pocket.

Prior to Brady’s shock announcement today, the football that was expected to be the NFL great’s final touchdown pass – when he linked up wide receiver Mike Evans during Tampa Bay’s NFC divisional playoff loss to the LA Rams – sold at auction yesterday for $715,000 AUD.

A total of 23 people placed bids during the auction. The item started at $138,000.

While any memorabilia of Brady will fetch a handsome sum of money, news today of Brady’s return to football erases all the added value placed on the ball being used as his final touchdown pass.

It’s unclear at this stage whether the auction will stand or if the winning bidder will back out.

Making matters worse, social media was quick to go all-in on the winning bidder, with many of the NFL’s leading voices poking fun at the sale.
