Tottenham boss Antonio Conte launches into furious rant after Wolves loss – ‘I am trying’ | Football | Sport

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte has spoken out after his side’s 2-0 defeat to Wolves on Sunday. Spurs went into the game hoping to boost their chances of securing Champions League football, especially after Manchester United’s draw with Southampton. Yet it was another bad day at the office for the north London giants, with the players booed off the field at full time.

Tottenham were frustrated in midweek when they lost 3-2 at home to Southampton.

And their turbulent campaign hit a new low on Sunday, with Wolves cruising to a 2-0 victory in their Premier League clash.

Mexico international Raul Jimenez put the visitors ahead in the sixth minute.

And Wolves’ Leander Dendoncker then doubled their lead 13 minutes later, with Bruno Lage’s side then shutting up shop and seeing out the game.

Tottenham, once again, were poor – with Conte cutting a frustrated and animated figure on the touchline.

And Conte has now spoken to Sky Sports after the game, furiously ranting about his side’s circumstances and insisting they must improve if they’re to finish in the top four.

“It is very difficult today, at the end it was one of the best games we played, we created many chances to score and we had the possession,” he said.

“But for sure it is very difficult to explain the way we started – I think the two goals are very difficult to comment.

“After the game against Southampton I said this is part of the process but we know very well that it is not easy when you start the game in this way, because when you go 2-0 down it is not simple and I have nothing to tell about the commitment of the players because until the end we pushed and tried to score.

“We created chances. But in the end we are talking about another defeat and we have to continue to work and to know that it won’t be easy for us.

“I am telling you from my arrival that we have to struggle every game, I was very clear after three weeks about my opinion and we have to continue to work.

“There are a lot of jobs to do but it is not simple because the environment is used to play for Champions League, Europa League, but everyone maybe has to realise something has changed and you have to try to work to build again and we have to know this.

“I am trying with my players to do everything to improve the situation but the environment has to understand which is our position in this moment.

“When you lose two games in a row at home and a previous game against Chelsea, a team that wants to fight for the Champions League is impossible.

“We have to fight and try to build something important to improve the situation but it is important to know the situation because otherwise maybe our fans could be disappointed and instead they have to try and push us and stay behind us – these players need to feel the right atmosphere and not pressure about a target that at this moment you can’t think.

“This is my evaluation.”

Wolves boss Bruno Lage, meanwhile, was thrilled with his side’s result.

“We didn’t play I think the way we should against Arsenal,” he said.

“The motivation for this game was to come and play our game. I don’t care where we are playing.

“We respect the opponents but you need to come with big confidence and we did. We were the better side first half, it was very good.

“Second half was a bit different as they change the system and try to score. We hold on and create chances.

“In the end the most important thing is the way we play as that is what creates the chances, the goals and the points.

“We work hard to prepare the games in the best way and give all the information to the players.

“After, we need them to play our game. Where we go depends on our character. We have the personality to play like this. We have ambition to conquer good things.

“I am here to play my game and create pressure for other teams. We did that today. One more week to go and work. We need to continue in this way, challenge the platers to play how they did today.

“Every time is a moment to play our game. It is important for my career but I believe in what I am saying. Now it is down to the team to have the character to achieve more.”
