Twitter Files: Here’s what FBI has to say on disclosures

Twitter has been releasing a trove of “internal documents”, called Twitter Files, which highlight the social media company’s decision making and US Federal Bureau of Investigation‘s (FBI) involvement in the content moderation on the platform. In one of the sets of files, it was ‘revealed’ that the FBI had asked Twitter to censor the content revolving around US President Joe Biden‘s son, Hunter Biden, during the 2020 election campaign.
The FBI has now issued a statement calling Elon Musk-allied journalists, who released internal documents, as “conspiracy theorists.”

The officials of the law agency also noted that they didn’t give Twitter employees “specific instructions or details regarding the Hunter Biden laptop story.” The FBI also denied back channel communications with Twitter employees to suppress or spike the Hunter Biden laptop story.
When asked whether it provided information to Twitter employees directly or indirectly regarding the Hunter Biden story, the agency said it focuses on activities attributed to foreign actors, not on the content or narrative.

FBI’s statement on Twitter Files
“It is unfortunate that conspiracy theorists and others are feeding the American public misinformation with the sole purpose of attempting to discredit the agency,” Fox News quoted the law enforcement agency as saying.
“The correspondence between the FBI and Twitter show nothing more than examples of our traditional, longstanding and ongoing federal government and private sector engagements, which involve numerous companies over multiple sectors and industries,” the agency said.

“As evidenced in this correspondence, the FBI provides critical information to the private sector in an effort to protect themselves and their customers. The men and women of the FBI work every day to protect the American public,” FBI added.
Previously, the FBI said it had not forced Twitter to remove any content. “Private sector entities independently make decisions about what, if any, action they take on their platforms and for their customers after the FBI has warned them,” the agency said in a statement it released on December 16.
