Late last year Twitter rolled out the closed caption support on its platform. In April this year, the microblogging site started testing the closed caption toggle with a select number of iPhone users. Now, the company has finally announced that it is rolling out the caption toggle for its video player for everyone on iOS and Android.
The Verge has reported that the new caption toggle is now available for everyone running the latest version of Twitter app on their Android and iOS smartphones. It is important to note that the feature has been available on Twitter web for a while now.
As far as the new caption toggle is concerned, it automatically appears at the top-right corner if a video has captions in it. Users can simply tap on the ‘CC’ icon to enable or disable the captions for that particular video, just like it happens on YouTube.
While it isn’t a new feature altogether, other video platforms have been offering captions for a while now and some even offer automated captions as well where the platform automatically generates captions even if the video natively does not contain captions.
Twitter spokesperson Shaokyi Amdo has confirmed to The Verge that the closed captions button on Twitter only appears when a person uploads a video with a caption in it. It does not support the automated caption system.
Meanwhile, Twitter has recently started testing a new feature that allows users to share notes with up to 2,500 words on the platform. The microblogging site is currently running the test run with select users for two months in Canada, Ghana, UK and US.
