uber: Indian economy saw Rs 44,600 crore worth of value generated by Uber in 2021, says report
The company produced Rs 1.5 trillion in consumer surplus in 2021 — equivalent to 0.8 per cent of India’s GDP, the report said.
Going by current numbers, the drivers, who the company calls “driver-partners”, earn an additional Rs 1,700 crore a year in higher income through Uber, it said. According to the company, this amount is an average 49% higher than what they could have earned from the next-best alternative work option.
According to claims made by the company, it has 6 lakh driver-partners in the country.
From an user perspective, as many as 96 per cent of Uber users find convenience as an important reason for using the service, the report said.
“In a normal year, we estimate that Uber saves riders over 16.8 crore hours a year. In fact, as per Indian riders, ridesharing is the most significant transport innovation they have experienced in the last decade,” it added.
The company is proud of the contribution it has made to Indian economy and remains committed to bringing meaningful change through every ride, news agency PTI quoted India and South Asia president Prabhjeet Singh as saying.
The report was put together by research firm Public First. It measured economic impact in terms of “driver-partner payouts, indirect and direct impact of driver-partner spending on vehicles and induced impact of additional driver-partner income.”
