US Masters news 2023 | Jason Day hits into the water at US Masters, Tiger Woods withdrawal

He was in contention in the final rounds, but Jason Day had a US Masters tournament to forget after a horror stretch on the final day.

In the second round, Day was still a chance at securing Australia’s second green jacket but had a horrible ending to the event, putting a ball into the water and taking three putts from three feet on another hole.

The 12th hole was arguably Day’s worst, where he stood at the edge of the bunker, and watched his ball roll into the water after a heavy putt.

Before that, a four-putt double bogey occurred on the ninth with the Australian carding an eight-over 80 in his fourth round on Monday morning.

Day was reportedly suffering from health issues and evidently struggled to gain any rhythm throughout his final charge.

The former world number one surged close to the top of the leaderboard on Saturday morning and looked like he could be a challenger for the title.

Day did not speak to reporters at the end of his tournament, but did provide a reason behind Tiger Woods’ departure in the middle of the third round when speaking in between the third and fourth rounds.

Woods’ withdrawal was the second time he’d pulled out of a major championship since the start of 2022, with the first coming in the third round of the PGA Championship in May.

Day revealed to media that Woods told him the real reason for that first withdrawal.

“I was talking to him at the end of last year, and then he was saying the reason why he pulled out of the PGA [Championship] was a screw went through the skin on Saturday or whatever it was,” Day said.

“He looked like he was labouring pretty hard yesterday.

“It was obviously difficult to watch because he had to come back out and then play through all that yesterday morning, and then he had to take a little bit of a break and come back out and play again.

“It wasn’t the perfect conditions for him to be able to at least get through the round. It’s disappointing, but that’s just kind of, I think, where we’re at with how his body is right now.”
