Wallabies squad to tour Argentina for Rugby Championship announced

Giant lock Rory Arnold will replace Samu Kerevi in the Wallabies squad to tour Argentina while Reds fullback Jock Campbell has also booked his Rugby Championship ticket.

Arnold missed the England series as coach Dave Rennie used all three of his foreign wildcard picks on backs: Kerevi, Quade Cooper and Marika Koroibete.

But with Kerevi missing the two Pumas Tests to play sevens at the Commonwealth Games, Arnold was an obvious pick to beef up the forward pack.

The 2.08m, 120kg veteran looms as a likely starter against the Michael Cheika-coached Argentina outfit that beat Scotland 2-1 in their home July series.

Campbell, meanwhile, gets a look in after being consigned to Australia A duties this month.

His inclusion in a 36-man squad will please Wallabies legend David Campese, who argued he should have been the Test starter against England.

“He’s an unpredictable player with vision and a lot of potential,” Campese wrote in his Wide World of Sports column.

“He just needs a bit of help around the field because he gets isolated sometimes.

“He’s got the confidence but I think he needs to know when to back himself and when to pass. He’s still got a long way to go but he is one of those attacking runners that you want to see. He just needs the players around him to support him…

“With the World Cup only a year away, it’s time to find out whether Campbell can make the step up to international rugby. He can kick and pass and is willing to have a go. That puts pressure on the opposition to kick well because he can return the ball with interest.”

Rennie will name his full squad at midday AEST on Thursday to prepare for the opening Test in Salta on August 7.

Nine’s Michael Atkinson is reporting that uncapped Rebels prop Matt Gibbon will be selected as a replacement for the injured Angus Bell.
