What triggered the protests
The trigger for the protests appears to be a plan to delay bonus payments, many of the demonstrators said on livestream feeds. Some reports, quoting employees, say that the company changed terms of their pay. Earlier this month, discontent over strict quarantine rules, Foxconn’s inability to stamp out outbreaks and poor conditions including shortages of food reportedly caused some workers to flee the Zhengzhou factory campus. Social media showed several such incidents where employees jumped over barbed wires to run away. Many are also said to have been caught mid way and brought back.
What did Foxconn say
“Regarding any violence, the company will continue to communicate with employees and the government to prevent similar incidents from happening again,” Foxconn said in a statement. The fresh incident of protests is bad news for Foxconn as it already has been struggling to fill orders for Apple’s latest iPhones, iPhone 14 series.
