“What is a Marvel Picture?”- Francis Ford Coppola Berates the Formulaic Nature of MCU Movies

Legendary Hollywood filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola recently revealed his gripes towards the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the modern movie industry.

The director of films like The Godfather franchise joins a growing list of artists, who have taken up an issue with the MCU, with many terming them “not artistic” and built on a formula with repeated plot lines.

Over the last few years, many respected award-winning directors such as Martin Scorsese, Bong Joon-Ho, Ridley Scott, and Alejandro G. Iñárritu have spoken against the Marvel franchise for creating a similar theme-park experience with these movies instead of creating a film that moves audiences.

Coppola has been against the formulaic nature of the MCU for a long time, and he recently spoke about the modern movie industry during an interview with GQ.

In the interview where he discussed his next major project in Megalopolis, the director noted the shift in Hollywood with Marvel franchises taking over big budget studio films.

He later explained what he finds troubling about Marvel movies, because according to him, the MCU creates films based on a certain formula that fans love to see over and over again.

Coppola further noted how a similar situation has seeped into the big budget movies of Hollywood as well, when he compared the sequences of movies like Dune and No Time to Die.

In the end, it seems like the Oscar-winning director isn’t a big fan of the current meta in the movie making business, and he’s not the only major Hollywood figure to feel the same about it.
