Meta-owned WhatsApp released its ‘User Safety Report‘ for the month of October. The monthly report is released in compliance with the IT Rules, 2021. This month’s report covers information for the period from 1 August, 2022 to 31 August, 2022. During this period, the instant messaging app banned 2,328,000 WhatsApp accounts. Of these, 1,008,000 were proactively banned, before any reports from users. An Indian account is identified via a +91 phone number.
The messaging platform received 598 complaint reports in the month of August in India, and the records “actioned” were 27. ‘Accounts Actioned’ denotes reports where the company took remedial action based on the report. Taking action denotes either banning an account or a previously banned account being restored as a result
of the complaint.
The platform had banned nearly a similar number of bad accounts in India in July. Under the upgraded IT Rules 2021, major digital and social media platforms, with in excess of five million users, have to publish monthly compliance reports.
“WhatsApp is an industry leader in preventing abuse, among end-to-end encrypted messaging services. Over the years, we have consistently invested in Artificial Intelligence and other state-of-the-art technology, data scientists and experts, and in processes, in order to keep our users safe on our platform. In accordance with the IT Rules 2021, we’ve published our report for the month of August 2022. This user-safety report contains details of the user complaints received and the corresponding action taken by WhatsApp, as well as WhatsApp’s own preventive actions to combat abuse on our platform. As captured in the latest Monthly Report, WhatsApp banned over 2.3 million accounts in the month of August,” said a WhatsApp spokesperson.
