WhatsApp services went down for almost 2-hours earlier today. This is the biggest WhatsApp outage reported in the current year. The glitch on popular messaging app WhatsApp prevented users from sending or receiving text and video messages for almost two hours. WhatsApp users were also not able to make calls on the platform. WhatsApp Web, the app’s web version, used by many on their desktops and laptops, was also hit by the outage.
WhatsApp apologises for the ‘downtime’
Meta, which owns the popular messaging app, said it has fixed the glitch, and the service has been restored. “The brief outage was a result of a technical error on our part and has now been resolved,” said a Meta spokesperson in a statement. “We know people had trouble sending messages on WhatsApp today. We’ve fixed the issue and apologise for any inconvenience,” the statement added. Meta did not say what led to the outage.

Facebook-parent Meta acknowledged the disruption within half an hour. Meta said that it was trying to fix the problem. “We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble sending messages and we’re working to restore WhatsApp for everyone as quickly as possible,” a spokesperson said.
Biggest WhatsApp outage of the year 2022
This is WhatsApp’s first major outage of the year. The last big outage occurred on October 5, 2021 that took down WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook together, affecting millions of users for almost six hours before the services were restored. The duration and scale of the disruption to the four services used by billions of people led to a major incident that Downdetector website, which monitors live outage, described it as one of the largest-ever observed. At the time, Facebook acknowledged that the incident was due to an error on their part and was not a technical problem.
WhatsApp is among the most popular messaging services in the world. The instant messaging app is most popular in India and Brazil, the former is WhatsApp’s biggest market.
