When Is The Next Solar Eclipse In North America? After Europe’s ‘Smiley Face’ Sun Today Comes Six Eclipses For The U.S. And Canada

There’s a solar eclipse in Eurasia today—but when is it America’s turn?

Tuesday, October 25, 2022 sees a partial solar eclipse in Europe, north Africa, the Middle East, central Asia and India today, with as much as 82% of the Sun being covered by the New Moon.

North Americans annoyed by being on the night-side of Earth for this celestial event should take comfort in the fact that their continent is living through a golden age of solar eclipses. In fact, European eclipse-chasers would kill for the kind of celestial luck coming the way of North America.

Here’s the solar eclipse schedule for the rest of the 2020s, which comprises no fewer than six stunning events:

October 15, 2023: annular solar eclipse ‘ring of fire’

This annular solar eclipse—better known as a “ring of fire”— will last about 4 minutes 40 seconds will be visible from more than 20 of the best national parks in the U.S. southwest. Inside the 125 miles-wide “path of annularity” will be the likes of Crater Lake National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park and Natural Bridges National Monument, with high chances of clear skies on the Colorado Plateau. Every city in the U.S. will see a partial solar eclipse.

April 8, 2024: total solar eclipse

This “Great North American Eclipse” is the not-to-be-missed “big one”—likely the biggest celestial event of your lifetime. On Monday, April 8, 2024 a rare total solar eclipse lasting a maximum of 4 minutes 28 seconds will be visible from a path of totality through Mexico, 13 U.S. states and eastern Canada as the Moon’s central shadow sweeps across the continent in 139 minutes. Every city in the U.S. will see a partial solar eclipse.

August 12, 2026: partial solar eclipse

After today’s partial solar eclipse in Europe the continent won’t see another until today when a total solar eclipse will be observable in Iceland and Spain. It will be a large partial solar eclipse for most of Europe and also some of North America. Alaska, remote areas of northern Canada and Newfoundland see will 50% of the Sun blocked by the Moon. New York City will see a 10% partial solar eclipse, Boston 16% and Quebec City 25% with the event viewable as far south as the Carolinas.

August 2, 2027: partial solar eclipse

The 2024 total solar eclipse is the biggest eclipse of this era for North Americans, but those happy to travel need to know about this, the longest total solar eclipse is of the next 20 years. On offer is an immense six minutes and 23 seconds of totality in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens. Most of Africa and Europe will see a partial solar eclipse as will parts of Newfoundland, which will see about 30% of the Sun eclipsed by the Moon at sunrise.

January 26, 2028: partial solar eclipse

An annular solar eclipse “ring of fire” in the Galapagos Islands at sunrise and at sunset in Spain’s Balearic islands, this will also cause a big partial solar eclipse across North America. Key West in Florida will see an 18% partial solar eclipse.

January 14, 2029: partial solar eclipse

A huge partial solar eclipse exclusive to North America will see Seattle getting 71%, Billings in Montana 71%, Vancouver 72% and New York City 40%. The top choice, however, is Yellowknife in Canada, where a 81% eclipsed sunrise will be visible—a dramatic end to a night of viewing the aurora borealis, perhaps. It’s one of four partial solar eclipses across the world in 2029.
