Why iPhone fans may have to wait more for under-display Touch ID

Apple was widely reported to be testing under-display Touch ID for its current flagship iPhone 13 series. Reports from The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg claimed that the tech giant tested the feature in some iPhone 13 models. However, new reports say that the iPhone fans may have to wait more for this technology. According to popular Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is unlikely to launch any iPhone model with the under-screen Touch ID feature in the next two years. In September last year, Kuo predicted that the company may release an iPhone model with new Touch-ID feature in late 2023 but his latest tweets counters that claim.
“I previously predicted iPhones would support under-display fingerprint sensing/Touch ID in 2023 at the earliest. But the latest survey indicates new iPhones in 2023 & 2024 may not adopt under-display Touch ID. Face ID with a mask on iPhone is already a great biometrics solution.” says Kuo in the tweet.
The under-display Touch ID feature could have been a useful feature during the pandemic as users were finding it difficult to unlock their iPhone using Face ID while wearing face masks. But with iOS 15.4, Apple addressed that issue with the new Face ID with mask feature that allows users to authenticate their ID even while having a mask on.
Apple is also working on under-display Face ID for future iPhone. As per a recent report by Korean website The Elec, Apple will use the new technology from Samsung to hide Face ID under the display. The report suggests that Apple iPhone 15 Pro models may only have a single punch hole camera at the front as the Face ID will be hidden under the display.
