The demand for WIPL has been growing for some years now, and BCCI secretary Jay Shah was pushing hard for it, said a senior source in the BCCI.
Earlier, on June 15th, Shah had told ET in an exclusive interview that the board had big plans for women’s IPL.
“This is something very close to my heart. We will be launching the Women’s IPL in 2023 with five-six new teams. We will go to market with a fresh tender very soon and everyone will have an opportunity to pick teams,” he had told ET.
BCCI, he mentioned, was hopeful of getting international women players for the league. The decision was taken at the 91st annual general meeting (AGM) of the BCCI here in Mumbai.
Rajeev Shukla and Shah were re-elected as the vice president and secretary, respectively, while former Assam Cricket Association secretary Devajit Saikia was elected as joint secretary.
Former Mumbai Cricket Association chief Ashish Shelar has replaced Arun Singh Dhumal as treasurer.
