World of Warcraft Dragonflight Removes Gendered Language From Character Creator

The alpha testing for World of Warcraft Dragonflight has replaced the gendered language in the game’s character creator.

The closed alpha for World of Warcraft Dragonflight began on July 15 and with it came some reworked language in the character creation process.

While the base game of World of Warcraft contains gendered language when choosing body type, i.e “male” or “female” options. The new character creator relabels these options as “Body 1” and “Body 2”, removing gender-specific terminology.

Datamined strings also indicate the option to select pronouns, between he/him, she/her and they/them may be coming in the future. This code is not currently linked with any UI elements but it’s interesting nonetheless that Blizzard may be tinkering with inclusivity options for World of Warcraft (via Wowhead).

This is one of the several changes added in the ongoing Dragonflight expansion closed alpha. Blizzard is focusing on testing specific features and locations in a series of play tests for Dragonflight. Players will be able to opt-in to closed playtesting on the Dragonflight product page, with a series of different playtests planned.

Azure Span, one of the largest zones ever added to World of Warcraft, is the location of choice for the current round of Dragonflight alpha testing. The Drakthyr race and its accompanying evoker class are also currently available to play on the closed alpha.

Blizzard has showcased some of the customisation options for the upcoming Drakthyr race, with a variety of horns, scale colours and patterns and figure types available.

While it’s been confirmed that Dragonflight will be released during 2022, an official release date has yet to be announced. However, it’s speculated that Blizzard will target the holiday market for releasing their latest World of Warcraft expansion.
