UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday distributed letters of approval for land and houses under the state’s CM Awas Yojana to 63 Hindu Bengali families who had fled Bangladesh (then East Pakistan) in 1970 and have been trying to lead a settled life in India since then.

Two acres of land (for agriculture), 200 metre square residential plot and house under the CM Awas Yojana were given to 63 families, including about 400 people in Rasulabad area of Kanpur Dehat, in line with the BJP-led Centre’s attempt to give citizenship to and rehabilitate minorities from Muslim-dominated countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh for which the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was also passed.

While distributing the letters, the CM also made an appeal to relevant departments to develop the area where the families have been granted plots and houses, as a “model village” or “smart village”, with facilities like schools, hospitals, proper drinking water amenities and to get women involved in self help groups, get men engaged in animal husbandry, and train children through various schemes of the state government.

“People who did not finding shelter in nations they were natives of, where they were tortured and harassed, India embraced them with open arms by not just giving them shelter but also working on their rehabilitation which is an example of India’s unparalleled service to mankind,” he said.

The CM said approximately 407 such Hindu Bengali families had come to India in 1970 when they had been given jobs in a cotton mill in Hastinapur (Meerut). However, when the mill was closed in 1984, families were rehabilitated in different parts of the country but 65 such families lived a nomadic life.

“Since then, many people in these families have passed away while waiting to be rehabilitated, while some families perished,” he said. He said they had approached previous governments but they never cared for them. The CM enumerated the work done by the state government for other the weak and marginalised communities since 2017.
