You could get £140 off winter electricity bill – check eligibility ‘as early as possible’ | Personal Finance | Finance

The one-off £140 discount is taken off a person’s electricity bill, between October and March, rather than being paid to the individual. Britons whose supplier provides their gas and electricity may also be able to get the discount off their gas bill.

A person’s Cold Weather Payment and Winter Fuel Payment will not be affected by them also receiving the discount.

People on pre-payment or pay-as-you-go meters can get the support, in which case the person’s supplier will have details about how they can receive the discount, such as in the form of a voucher.

Britons on the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit are eligible for the help, or those whose partner receives the Guarante Credit element.

A person is eligible as long as their energy supplier is part of the scheme and their name is on the bill.

People in this group will receive a letter with information about how to secure the discount, with details of a helpline to call if the person needs to confirm some details.

Individuals on low incomes can also apply to their electricity supplier for the support if they do not receive the Guarantee Credit.

This applies to people who are on certain means-tested benefits, and applicants will need to stay with their supplier until the discount is paid.

Potential applicants may want to note that suppliers decide who gets the discount, with limited discounts available.

DON’T MISS

Claimants will need to know their National Insurance number, bank or building society details, and the date they got married (if applicable).

Cold Weather Payments also go out automatically, for when the average temperature in a person’s area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees or below for seven consecutive days.

The scheme runs from November 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023 and people get paid £25 for each seven day period of cold weather.

The support is available to people on certain benefits, including Pension Credit, Income Support, Jobseeker’s Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance, Universal Credit, or a Support for Mortgage Interest (SMI) loan.
