If Broja’s injury is serious it will be a bitter blow to his hopes of fighting for a starting spot under Potter. He had been brought in to start two Premier League games before the campaign was temporarily suspended due to the World Cup.

Broja was given the nod over Aubameyang in the last Premier League fixture against Newcastle to lead the line for Chelsea. Potter is still waiting for a number of his first-team players to return to training following their exploits at the World Cup.

Reece James was also left out of the squad to face Villa as he continues his rehab. Wesley Fofana, Carney Chukwuemeka, Ben Chilwell, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and N’Golo Kante have also been doing fitness work to try and return in time for the restart of the Premier League.
