‘Creating 10X Women Founders in India’ study identifies what hurts and may help women in Indian startup ecosystem

A recent joint study, titled, ‘Creating 10X Women Founders in India,’ conducted by TiE Delhi-NCR, Zinnov, Google, NetApp, and Indian Angel Network highlights the gender gap in India’s technology start-up ecosystem. According to the study, India has around 28,000 active technology start-ups, but only 18% of them have women founders or co-founders. The study names stereotypical myths and perceptions as primary factors that hinder women from starting up.
The joint study also reveals that women-founded startups and male-founded startups have comparable performance across different metrics. However, socio-cultural barriers and underrepresentation in technology and business domains inhibit women founders’ growth, hindering them from actively choosing entrepreneurship.
To bridge this gender gap, the study outlines a two-pronged approach. The first is to identify underlying causes, and the second is to take definitive steps that yield measurable outcomes. The study highlights six priority areas for action, from starting up to scaling, to encourage more women to start up in India.
Initiatives such as Sequoia’s ‘She Builds’ series, WEE Foundation’s programs, Google for Startups, NetApp Excellerator, SheCapital, and Encubay’s Angel Investment Network have been instrumental in helping women founders scale their start-ups through dedicated mentorship, market access, networks, and funding.
The study’s findings underscore the importance of collective action from all stakeholders in the start-up ecosystem to achieve gender equity and encourage more women to start up in India.
