Elon Musk has been quite critical of OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, taking a jibe at them now and then. And now, Twitter, under Musk’s ownership, is working on an in-house artificial intelligence project to take on the ChatGPT maker.
After hiring a couple of former researchers of DeepMind, Musk is now moving on with the in-house artificial intelligence project, purchasing about 10,000 GPUs, reports Business Insider.
Citing a source, the report says that these GPUs are for use at one of Twitter’s two data centres. The source says that the purchase shows Musk is “committed” to the AI effort, as it is unlikely that Twitter would invest such a substantial amount of money in these GPUs if they did not intend to use them for AI purposes.
As per reports, Twitter is working on building a generative AI using its vast data collection, although the exact use of AI at Twitter is not yet apparent. However, such an AI could enhance the search feature of the platform or help in reviving the company’s advertising business. These developments contradict with Musk’s recent advocacy for AI, where he urged a six-month halt on the development in an open letter he signed.
Despite being one of the early investors of OpenAI, a research organisation focused on artificial intelligence and ChatGPT maker, Musk has been openly critical of it, questioning its transformation into a for-profit entity. “I’m still confused as to how a non-profit to which I donated ~$100M somehow became a $30B market cap for-profit. If this is legal, why doesn’t everyone do it?” Musk said in one of his recent tweets.
While his feud with OpenAI seems a case of ethics, it is more personal for Elon. In 2018, Musk told Sam Altman, one of the co-founders of OpenAI, that the organisation was lagging too far behind Google. Musk proposed that he should take charge of the company, a proposal that Altman and the other co-founders of OpenAI disapproved of. He left with a broken promise of $1 billion in funding, leaving OpenAI with no option but to take funding from Microsoft.
After OpenAI released ChatGPT to the public in November and with all the coverage around it, Musk was said to be angry. He withdrew OpenAI’s access to Twitter’s data feed, known as the “firehose,” a month later. It now appears that Musk plans to go head on head with OpenAI, which means there could be one more player in the AI battle.
