Latrell Mitchell reveals moment he felt ‘at home’ as Rabbitohs contact talks loom

It seems South Sydney fans don’t need to worry about losing Latrell Mitchell to a rival club any time soon.

The enigmatic superstar fullback has been off contract since November 1 and free to negotiate with anyone he pleases.

There’s been suggestions he could command as much as $1.4 million a season on the open market – instantly making him the highest paid player in the NRL.

But it’s not all about money for the 25-year-old, who is in England preparing to line up for Australia against New Zealand in a World Cup semi final on Saturday morning.

He says he has no plans to leave the Rabbitohs, and that loyalty stems from an incident more than two years ago when COVID-19 first hit Australia.

Mitchell and his close friend Josh Addo-Carr were busted and fined by NSW Police for flouting social distancing laws, during a camping trip on Mitchell’s property.

”I don’t want to bring it back up, but the COVID thing, what happened with me and Foxx (Addo-Carr) a couple years back,” Mitchell said when asked about his contract situation with South Sydney.

“Souths were a massive support for myself. That’s when I knew I was at home.

“I’m pretty keen to see what happens for the future, definitely excited to get into (contract) talks and see where we’re at.”

The Rabbitohs kick off their 2023 season against Cronulla on March 4.
