Love Island’s Chris Hughes slams ‘brainless’ Grand National protestors | Celebrity News | Showbiz & TV
On Saturday, animal rights activists scaled the fences around Aintree just before the start of the main race, with some trying to attach themselves to the fences while others attempted to break onto the race course.
The protest caused widespread debate with both sides getting increasingly outraged as it was later revealed that three horses died during the Grand National.
Reality TV star Chris Hughes, 30, has become the latest celebrity to venture into the social media fray as he aired out his opinion on Twitter.
The former Love Islander condemned the protestors saying: “Protesters forcing the mental well-being of the racehorse to be affected.
“Brainless, uneducated people who respect nobody but themselves, whilst having the opposite effect of what they’re protesting.”

Almost instantly Chris received a barrage of comments sharing links and videos of the horses that had been injured and killed in the races as well as an overwhelming amount of criticism.
Easily_led argued: “Chris. Come on lad, horses died today. This race shouldn’t be happening. You love horses, these beautiful animals shouldn’t be dying for others’ entertainment. The Grand National doesn’t need to be like this. It doesn’t need to be so dangerous.”
Pmillington99 added, referring to one of the horses that tragically died: “Pretty sure Dark Raven wishes the race didn’t go ahead. Hard to watch that. If the jockeys died as often as a racehorse I’m sure we’d see a stop to jumps racing.”
EltontoNick took personal aim at Chris and his reality TV career as he sarcastically wrote: “‘Appeared on the third series of the ITV2 reality series Love Island.’ Clearly a spokeman for the nation.”
However, there were also many supporting Chris’ opinions, with many of his 486,000 followers in full agreement with him.
NicholasHunt86 declared: “Well said Chris. Shocking scenes at Aintree and not fair on the horses and jockeys!”
Lorrjsy concluded: “Absolutely agree. They disrupted what is usually a very well-run sporting event and it looked to me that the delayed start had a negative effect on the horses.”
